Meet the Speakers
Dr. Joseph C. Von Nessen is a Research Economist in the Division of Research at the Darla Moore School of Business where he specializes in regional economics and regional economic forecasting. He regularly conducts a wide variety of economic impact analyses, feasibility studies, and independent market research projects for clients in both the private and public sector. In addition, he is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the University of South Carolina's annual statewide economic forecast, serves on the advisory committee for the South Carolina Board of Economic Advisors, and is regularly invited to brief the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond on economic conditions in South Carolina. He is a frequent speaker for business and government leaders throughout the United States - providing information and consultation about business, markets, and local economies. He also makes frequent media appearances to discuss various local economic topics of interest. Dr. Von Nessen earned his B.A. at Furman University and his Ph.D. in economics at the University of South Carolina.
Steve Townes is CEO & founder of Ranger Aerospace, Vice Chairman of ACL Airshop, with co-investor/Board roles in Ranger affiliates Phoenix Defense, InTech Aerospace, and Essential Turbines. His companies have aviation support capabilities at over 60 global airports. Townes is on the Board of “SC Aerospace” a statewide organization, and was its founding chairman. He is an engineering graduate of West Point (U.S.M.A.) with advanced education at Long Island University (MBA) and Harvard Business School (PMD). His distinguished aerospace career began in 1980 at LTV Aerospace & Defense, following his early years as an airborne-infantry Captain in the 1st/75th Ranger Battalion. Townes won the Eisenhower Award upon graduation at West Point, graduated #1 from the Army’s grueling Ranger School, and was awarded South Carolina’s highest civilian honor (the Order of the Palmetto) for his tireless advancement of “aviation high schools” in the state and his decades as a progressive employer of aerospace services companies with preferential employment of Veterans.
